Another Powerful Weapon from AMD: Threadripper CPUs and Laptop APUs to Feature 3D Cache

kyojuro Rabu, 6 November 2024

As we previously reported, the technical documentation for the ASUS WRX90 Threadripper motherboards highlighted a groundbreaking development: the incorporation of 3D V-Cache stacked cache. This marks the first instance of 3D cache being integrated into the Threadripper line. Excitingly, recent updates reveal that AMD's laptop APUs will also leverage this innovative 3D cache technology.

To begin with, the inclusion of 3D cache in the Threadripper series has been confirmed. Unlike the EPYC X3D version, where the 3D cache is stacked on each CCD, the Ryzen X3D features a single CCD configuration. This architectural enhancement promises significant performance gains for enthusiasts eagerly anticipating the next generation of Threadrippers built on the Zen 5 architecture.

On the laptop front, AMD is no stranger to 3D cache technology. The company launched the Ryzen 9 7945HX3D last year as a direct adaptation from its desktop counterpart. However, laptop offerings remain limited, with no announcements regarding a successor just yet.

This time around, the focus shifts to the APU X3D, a true native mobile variant designed for high-performance applications, comparable to the forthcoming Strix Halo series. These APUs target thin and light gaming laptops, offering a new level of mobile computing power.

Although specific details are not yet available, reports suggest that various configurations are under testing. One of the simpler options involves a shared 3D cache for both CPU and GPU processes. However, final specifications are not expected to be confirmed until the latter half of next year.

Intel, take note—without a viable 3D cache strategy, it's a tough competition ahead.
