The Zen architecture has been a significant milestone for AMD. Over the past seven years, it has revitalized AMD from the doldrums and propelled it to the forefront of the industry. At Computex Taipei 2024, AMD announced the next generation of the Zen 5 architecture, which uses TSMC’s 4nm and 3nm nodes to advance its journey in high-performance computing. AMD plans to utilize state-of-the-art processes and innovative design technologies in each upcoming generation.

AMD Executive Vice President Forrest Norrod was interviewed by The Next Platform, where he discussed AMD's future strategy. When asked about Intel's process and product roadmap, especially the recently announced Xeon 6 processor, Forrest Norrod praised Intel's aggressive plans. He mentioned that AMD believes Intel will stick to its roadmap, though achieving their process technology and product goals on time remains uncertain. To best compete with rivals, AMD aims to design products that exceed those of its competitors.

Forrest also discussed the process and design techniques that keep AMD competitive. AMD is mainstreaming small chip designs and bringing products like the MI300A, which combines a CPU and GPU, to market. Intel had similar plans with its now-canceled Falcon Shores XPU. AMD continues to segment its processor offerings with innovations like the “C” core, optimized for compute centers and cloud services, offering an impressive number of cores.

Looking ahead, AMD maintains that TSMC is a great partner and commits to using its state-of-the-art process technology. These advancements will also include innovative design, assembly, and packaging technologies, as seen in the upcoming Rui Long 9000X3D chip featuring a new 3D V-Cache.

AMD is set to launch its first Zen 5 products in July, including the Strix Point Razor AI 300 and Granite Ridge Razor 9000 processors. The fifth-generation EPYC Turin is slated for release in the third quarter of 2024.
