Intel presented some technical details at COMPUTEX 2024 on the Lunar Lake architecture, a processor for the next generation of AI PCs, part of the Core Ultra 200 series. Lunar Lake delivers a quantum leap in graphics and AI processing power, focusing on improving energy-efficient computing performance in thin and light notebooks. Compared to its predecessor, Lunar Lake will reduce SoC power consumption by up to 40% and deliver more than a 3x increase in AI power.
According to a report by DigiTimes, Intel has delayed shipments of Lunar Lake processors from June to September. Intel had initially planned to collaborate with more than 20 OEMs to release over 80 new products in the third quarter of this year. In contrast, both AMD and Qualcomm's next-generation products have already started shipping, potentially putting Intel a quarter behind its competitors. Particularly noteworthy is Qualcomm's recent partnership with Microsoft on CoPilot+ PCs, which has been a driving force in the AI PC market, with laptops featuring Snapdragon X-series processors available since June 18th.
Intel is using memory-on-package (MoP) technology in Lunar Lake, directly integrating Samsung-supplied LPDDR5X-8533 memory in 16/32GB capacities to reduce power consumption and minimize size. With a compact package size of 27.5 x 27 mm, this 8W to 30W chip is designed for low-power systems on mobile platforms. The 8W model operates without a fan, while the 17W to 30W models are fan-enabled.
Lunar Lake utilizes the Lion Cove architecture for P-Core and Skymont architecture for E-Core, featuring up to 4 P-Core and 4 E-Core. It employs the Xe2-LPG architecture from the next-generation Battlemage, with up to 8 Xe-Cores, supporting real-time ray tracing, VCC/H.266 hardware video decoding, and video outputs including DP 1.4, HDMI 2.1, and eDP 1.4/1.5. Additionally, it integrates the next-generation NPU 4.0 Neural Processing Unit, supports PCIe 5.0/4.0 x4 interfaces, comes equipped with Thunderbolt 4 and up to three USB4 ports, and offers support for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4.
